Verona's Summer Got Denser: A Field Guide for People Who Already Live Here

You have probably driven past the Mill District twice this week without noticing the excavator behind Tabby and Jack's. You have probably ordered the fish fry at Orchard three times this year without knowing what the drinks list is actually doing. And if you moved here more than five years ago, you have probably repeated the old joke about detouring to Fitchburg or Madison for anything past eight o'clock.

That joke is getting harder to defend.

This is a field guide to what changed in Verona between January and now, written for the person who already lives here and just wants to know which Thursday to block off.

The bet at 303 W. Verona Ave.

Ian's Pizza broke ground on its Verona location in mid-January and is set to open this summer at 303 W. Verona Ave., in the Mill District, next to Tabby and Jack's Pet Supplies and adjacent to Century School Park. At roughly 8,000 square feet, it will be the largest Ian's in Wisconsin, with an indoor dining room, an all-season beer garden, patio seating, and a private event room.

The size is the tell. Ian's isn't opening a slice window on Verona Avenue. Managing partner Nick Martin drew the comparison directly, saying the site reminded them of their Garver Feed Mill location, which has "become a neighborhood hub with events and music," and that they could see the same energy developing here.

Read that as a claim about the block, not the pizza. Century School Park is where the Verona Area Chamber of Commerce runs Concerts in the Park, Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m., June 18 through August 27 this year. Now put an 8,000-square-foot beer garden one lot over. The Thursday-night pattern that used to end when the last set finished has a next chapter starting this summer.

Orchard is a tasting room. You have been eating dinner in it.

Most residents know Orchard at 881 W. Verona Ave. as the Friday fish fry with a good patio. Fewer know that The Cider Farm, the operation behind the restaurant, was named Best Microcidery at the 2026 GLINTCAP Awards, the largest cider competition in the world.

The backstory changes how the drinks list reads. Twenty years before Orchard opened in Verona, Deirdre Birmingham and John Biondi began planting a Driftless Area farm outside Mineral Point with 16,000 apple trees. Not eating apples. English and French cider varieties. Certified organic. The Verona restaurant is what happens when a 20-year agricultural project decides it needs a room.

The July 8 argument for a fourth visit

The Summer Cider Dinner on July 8 at 6:00 p.m. is a four-course menu from Chef Ian Hutchins paired by cider maker Jason Cassidy, one of only three certified Pommeliers in Wisconsin, at $75 per person. If you have been three times and always defaulted to the fish fry and a pint of something familiar, this is the version of Orchard that explains why the place exists.

Yeeshan, and what "closed Tuesdays" tells you

Yeeshan Asian Eatery welcomed its first guests on January 9, 2026. Founder Jennifer Li left a finance career in 2025 to open it. Executive Chef Victor Chong, who began his career in Kuala Lumpur, developed the menu around Chinese, Thai, and Japanese-inspired dishes. In warm weather the front garage-style doors open to the sidewalk.

Two operational details are worth reading closely. Yeeshan opens at 4 p.m. and is closed on Tuesdays. That is not a soft launch. That is a chef-driven restaurant setting its own rhythm on a Verona Avenue that historically catered to lunch traffic and family dinner shifts. It is also the second recent Verona opening to price and present itself against Madison rather than against the drive-past strip.

Add Yeeshan to Orchard and the incoming Ian's and you have three restaurants within a short drive of each other that are either brand-new or newly ambitious. The fourth leg is already here, quietly.

Thursdays are the answer

If you have kids and a full week, one calendar item is doing more work than the others this summer.

The Chamber's 2026 lineup for Century School Park runs the range you would expect from a suburban series that has grown up. Old Soul Society leans Americana with folk and roots edges. Cherry Pie is a 24-year-old festival band doing the 80s hair catalog with production values borrowed from national acts. Foo Foo Dolls is five lead singers cycling through 90s rock. Small Blind Johnny plays Chicago-style blues. Point being: the lineup is not a background hum. Pack a chair.

The Military Ridge morning that isn't 40 miles

The Military Ridge State Trail is the outdoor amenity Verona residents cite most and use least. Part of the reason is that the standard framing is intimidating. The trail runs 40 miles between Dodgeville and Madison along an 1855 military route. Forty miles is a commitment. A Saturday morning is not.

Here is the compressed version that works if you have kids, coffee, and a lunch plan:

1. Park at Hometown USA Community Park and step onto the trail without loading a bike rack.
2. Head west toward the Sugar River crossing, about two miles out. Turn around when someone complains.
3. Loop back to Hometown Junction Park, 101 W. Railroad St., which sits directly off the trail and hosts the Verona Downtown Farmers Market during the season.
4. Grab produce at the market. The Farley Center runs Dane County's only farm incubator, and a lot of the vendors you'll meet grow their produce there, certified organic through the Midwest Organic Services Association.
5. Walk to Ian's or Orchard for lunch depending on which direction the eight-year-old is voting.

That is a Verona Saturday that used any of the last four sentences of infrastructure. Almost none of it existed in this configuration three years ago.

What you can't see from the street yet

Two developments will change the shape of the next twelve months without showing up on a summer calendar.

Construction is officially underway on SSM Health's new outpatient medical center on the south side of Verona. That changes commute patterns for anyone currently driving to Fitchburg or the west side for imaging, labs, or specialty appointments. It also changes the calculus on the housing stock south of Verona Avenue that has been priced against a longer drive to care.

Meanwhile, Epic remains the gravity well the rest of the market bends around. That is not news. What is news is that Epic's continued hiring keeps the transferee pipeline steady, and the transferee pipeline is a big part of why a restaurant like Yeeshan and a room like Orchard's can survive on a Tuesday-closed, Pommelier-led model in a suburb of 12,743.

Mark the Memorial Day weekend now

One more thing, since we are talking about the shape of the year. Verona Hometown Days runs May 29–31 at Hometown USA Festival Park, with the Sunday parade at 11 a.m. Wenzel Amusements returns with the carnival. Haven's Petting Farm is back in the Kid's Zone. The Pelliterri Rocks and Sugar River Pizza Co. stages carry live music all weekend. It is the one weekend of the year when the argument for staying in town instead of leaving for the lakes writes itself.

The pattern to notice

If you take one thing from this guide: Verona is quietly assembling a downtown night. Ian's is the anchor bet. Orchard is the destination room. Yeeshan is the weeknight. Concerts in the Park is the reason you walk over. Hometown Junction is the Saturday morning. Military Ridge is the excuse to bring the bike.

None of it required a move. All of it required someone deciding Verona was worth building for.
