Moving to Sauk City/Prairie du Sac: The Ultimate Guide

The two Wisconsin River towns of Sauk City and Prairie du Sac are often referred to as Sauk Prairie. Sauk Prairie is a growing community located 20 minutes northwest of Madison. Many activities to explore include canoeing or fishing on the river, touring a winery or brewery, enjoying riverside dining or visiting the original Culvers. There are many nearby state parks such as Devil’s Lake or visit Dr. Evermore’s Sculpture Park along Hwy 12. In the winter, you can see the eagles soar over the Wisconsin River at the public Overlook. Located in Sauk County, it has a population of 3,409.

Sauk Prairie School District is made up of sixteen municipalities including the villages of Merrimac, Prairie du Sac, and Sauk City. From the four-year-old kindergarten and early childhood programs to the Community Center programming for senior citizens, the district are committed to providing lifelong learning opportunities for the entire community. Its superintendent is Jeff Wright.

Area Highlights

  • Devil’s Lake State Park is a state park located in the Baraboo Range in eastern Sauk County, just south of Baraboo. Devil’s Lake State Park is the third oldest state park but the largest and most visited state park in Wisconsin. Devil’s Lake has fantastic views from its 500-foot bluffs overlooking a 360-acre lake. The park has 2 entrances (North and South) both with sandy beaches, campsites & concessions. There are 29 miles of hiking trails throughout the park.
  • Veterans Memorial park sits along the Wisconsin River and has camping, shelters, picnic tables, access to Wisconsin River for boats and canoes, playground and fishing.
  • Wollersheim Winery & Distillery was established in the 1840s, and has developed into a leader in the Midwestern wine industry, winning numerous awards throughout its storied history. Wollersheim Winery is located on a scenic hillside across the Wisconsin River from Prairie du Sac. Shopping and reservable wine tastings daily.
  • Gibraltar Rock State Natural Area is a natural area in southern Wisconsin, United States, which is 68 acres in size, and is located along the 1,000-mile-long Ice Age Trail.
  • Circus World Museum is a large museum complex in Baraboo, devoted to circus-related history. Circus World combines both the historical and entertaining aspects of the Ringling Brothers circus. At the entrance of Circus World is a museum chronicling the history of the Ringling family and the circus itself. There are original circus posters and props displayed.
  • Dr. Evermor’s Sculpture Park is an outdoor art gallery. Dr. Evermor’s Forevertron is the largest scrap metal sculpture in the world, standing 50 ft. high and 120 ft. wide, and weighing 300 tons. Built in the 1980s, it is housed in Dr. Evermor’s Art Park on Highway 12, in the town of Sumpter.
  • Bald Eagle Watching Days is typically scheduled for January and February. Ferry Bluff Eagle Council (FBEC) maintains a public Overlook adjacent to the municipal parking lot on Water St. in Prairie du Sac. A permanent spot to to view eagles on nearby Eagle Island as well as perching on trees along the river.
